  • I have two old Tyco diesel locomotives  A GP-20 and a Alco Super 630. I would like to add DCC and sound to these engines but hear that the old TYCO motors draw too much current and will burn out the decoder. Has anyone experience with adding DCC and Sound to these engines? Has anyone swapped out the old motors for new ones?  Thanks in advance, Thom Everyone, Thank you for your responses, this was my first post to this forum and I appreciate the responses. Sorry it took me so long to reply. Thanksgiving got in the way. I'll probably keep the Alco it's painted for the Chessie System and my layout is CSX & NS around the Ohio river, so it fits in my scheme. I'll check out the Tyco links. The GP-20 is green with Penn Central and I was going to repaint it Conrail or MOW. I'll probably keep these on the shelf and save them for a future project. I wasn't aware of putting the old shells on new running gear but I'll check that out too.    Thanks again, Thom

  • People sometimes ask why anyone would waste time and money on Tyco garbage. Well, in a word, nostalgia. Model Rail Heads have a common denominator, that being a longing for the past. We recreate scenes and times from wonderful places we enjoyed. Tyco was cheap and easy to come by for a youngster, and while my first train set was a Wrenn, I was later introduced to Tyco when we returned to the States. So, I have a foot in two canoes, so to speak. My primary interest is the British range, and I recreate memories of English villages, canals, breath taking castles and unparalleled ancient relics that dominate ancient world history, such as Stone Henge or the Uffington Horse.
