Today, with over 1 billion active users, TikTok outpaces major platforms like Twitter, Reddit, Pinterest, and Snapchat. In the U.S. alone, it boasts 150 million monthly active users—almost half the country's population.But why the controversy?The core issue is national security and data privacy, amid concerns that user information could be shared with the Chinese government, potentially exposing sensitive data.Many American TikTok users view the platform as an essential outlet for free speech and economic opportunity. A recent report by the Threat Analysis Group (TAG) at Google documents the rise of the shady business of Commercial Surveillance Vendors, an industry that threatens free speech and press by selling high-end Spyware to nation-state actors or nefarious threat actors. The report gives an interesting insight into the operation of this lucrative industry and how they commercialise the ability to exploit vulnerabilities in consumer devices, and how their customers using this capability to monitor and collect data from high-risk persons like journalists, human rights defenders, dissidents and opposition party politicians or other politically exposed persons. https://lnkd.in/drt2jDqd

I am conflicted on the issue of TikTok as a national security issue. It is an understatement to say that free speech is an important and indispensable right. If this were an American company, I am pretty sure I would be against a ban for any reason other than foreign influence. The fact that this is a Chinese company makes this complicated. It might be naive to say it should be secured with first amendment protections. Right now I favor the proposed ban, but I could still be persuaded. Thoughts? Where do you guys come down on this issue? Is the best way to protect free speech to monitor and restrict malign foreign access and influence?https://lnkd.in/eXrqWdPb

This is just wrong – so many unnecessary lives lost to people who are so bad. There has to be a way to make these individuals pay for their crimes against humanity and others. I don’t understand why we don’t have a way to block these hackers from infiltrating our lives on every social media platform. We need training in schools to help teenagers understand how the internet can be used against them and how to be cautious about what they post online. It's crucial to raise awareness about online safety and privacy.
